AlpenSync Terms of Use
Effective date: 13 August 2026
These terms govern your use of the AlpenSync Android application and its source code (together, “AlpenSync”). AlpenSync is free software. It is not sold, and it is not offered as a hosted service.
If these terms and the GNU General Public License version 3 (GPL-3.0-only) conflict on a copyright-license point, **the GPL controls**.
By installing or running AlpenSync, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not install or run it.
1. License
AlpenSync is licensed under GPL-3.0-only. You may run, study, share, and modify it under that license. The full text is in `LICENSE` in the source repository.
There is no separate paid license, no proprietary edition, and no “click-wrap” that takes GPL rights away.
2. Not Proton, not GrapheneOS
AlpenSync is an independent community project. It is **not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by Proton AG** or the GrapheneOS project.
“Proton” and related marks belong to Proton AG. “GrapheneOS” is a trademark of the GrapheneOS project. AlpenSync uses those names only to describe compatibility.
Your use of Proton remains subject to Proton’s own terms: https://proton.me/legal/terms
3. Unofficial API
AlpenSync talks to Proton through Proton’s undocumented, unofficial API. That API can change or stop working without notice.
The project does not promise:
- compatibility with any future Proton change - uninterrupted sync - feature parity with Proton’s official apps - that every contact field or account mode is supported (for example, two-password / separate mailbox-password accounts are not supported)
If long-term vendor-backed stability is what you need, use Proton’s official clients.
4. No warranty
ALPENSYNC IS PROVIDED “AS IS”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NONINFRINGEMENT.
No contributor warrants that sync will be complete, lossless, or available when you need it. You are responsible for keeping a copy of contacts you cannot afford to lose (for example in your Proton account).
This section is intended to match GPL-3.0 §§15–16.
5. Limitation of liability
TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS OR CONTRIBUTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING LOSS OF CONTACTS, LOSS OF DATA, LOSS OF GOODWILL, OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION) ARISING FROM THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE ALPENSYNC, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY.
If a court finds a disclaimer unenforceable, liability is limited to the greatest extent that law allows. You paid nothing for the software.
6. What you must not rely on AlpenSync for
Do not use AlpenSync as the only copy of contacts required for safety, medical, legal, or emergency purposes. Do not use it where you need an SLA, official support, or a contractual data-processing agreement from the AlpenSync authors. We do not offer those.
7. Your responsibilities
You agree that:
- you have the right to sign in to the Proton account you use - you understand contacts will be stored decrypted in Android’s Contacts provider - you decide which other apps may read Contacts - you will keep Proton credentials to yourself - you will not use AlpenSync to violate Proton’s terms or applicable law
8. Privacy
How the app handles information is described in `PRIVACY.md` (Privacy Policy). That notice is part of how the software is offered.
9. Contributions
If you contribute code, documentation, or other material to the repository, you license that contribution under GPL-3.0-only, unless you and the project agree otherwise in writing. Do not contribute material you cannot license that way.
10. Changes
These terms may be updated in the source repository and in the app. The effective date will change. If you continue to run a build after that, you do so under the terms that shipped with that build or that are published for that version.
